First Oil Well

Back to Events

State Route 78,which leads to this site, has been named by Car and Driver Magazine as one of the most scenic drives in the nation. At the junction of State Route 78 and 564 is the site of the first oil well drilled in the U.S., in 1814. The original hollow log casing of the well is still intact.
The narrow-guage railroad, Bellaire, Zanesville, and Cincinnati (or Bent, Zigzag and Crooked as it was called), ran through here from 1879 to 1928, and part of the road bed is still visible. Also at the site is a relocated Flag Station and the original narrow gauge railroad caboose #33 that ran on this railroad.
